1. Bootcamp
Fitness boot camps are a great way to improve fitness as they are like having a personal trainer without the big price tag. You don’t have to waste energy thinking about what exercises you should be doing as the instructor will do that for you. Most boot camps combine cardio with a strength element so you get an all over body workout. They are generally held outside so you can soak up the sunshine and fresh air!
Where?
Fusion Sydney holds sessions at venues across the north shore at St Ives, North Sydney, Naremburn and Milsons Point.

2. Pole dancing
Pole dancing has had an image transformation in recent years. It’s no longer just a means of making money, but a way to improve strength.  Pole dancing strengthens and tones your upper body while tightening your core – plus it’s also a lot of fun. Due to its recent popularity, plenty of venues now offer beginners classes with no minimum strength or flexibility requirements. Try out a class with a friend for a workout you won’t even realise you’re doing.

3. Tabata Training
Tabata training is a high-intensity interval workout. One Tabata set requires 20 seconds of intense exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest. This process is repeated 8 times – taking a total of just 4-minutes. Sound easy? Try a 30-minute class – you won’t be laughing at the end. Tabata training is ideal for those who like to get in and out of the gym quickly, while still reaping the benefits.

4. Anti-gravity Yoga
Move over Bikram, there’s a new kind of yoga in town – and it involves hanging from the ceiling instead of dripping in sweat. Yes that’s right, as the name suggests anti-gravity yoga means you are actually suspended above the ground. Using a soft hammock, you manoeuvre yourself into traditional yoga positions. Doing so while hanging upside down allows the spine to decompress, which strengthens and stretches muscles.

Anti-Gravity Aerial Yoga has a venue on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
22 Roseberry St, Balgowlah

5. Rock Climbing
Indoor and outdoor rock climbing is a fun way to get in shape. Not only is it a form of cardio, it also helps to strengthen upper and lower body muscles. Increasing muscle mass means you burn kilojoules while completing the activity, plus you will continue to do so at a faster rate afterwards. Adding a couple of rock climbing sessions to your weekly fitness regime might be just what you need to stop those mince pies and second helpings of Christmas lunch hanging around on your body after Christmas.

ClimbFit is an indoor rock climbing gym with over 160 climbs to choose from.

6. Piloxing
Piloxing sees the marriage of Pilates and boxing – it sounds like a strange combination, but it works. Piloxing blends the speed of boxing with the targeted sculpting of Pilates. In your first Piloxing class expect a series of dance moves to get your heat pumping, while wearing weighted gloves to tone your arms.
